12) Finally, do not attempt to deal with clothing marked “dry clean only” by yourself. Turn them over to a professional dry cleaner. (For more information on caring for fine dress clothes, see the lesson on Ladies’ Maids and Valets.)

Some fabrics (most silks and fine wools) and certain garments (stockings and other lingerie) must be washed by hand. Fill a clean sink with cool water. While the water is running, add a small amount of mild washing soap. Immerse the garments in the soapy water one at a time and squeeze the suds through the garments. Do not scrub or wring the garments. Rinse with fresh water and hang to dry. Sweaters and other items that might become misshapen if hung should be “blocked” on a drying rack. (Avoid wooden racks, as they may splinter and often decay with prolonged exposure to dampness.)
